THE MONASTERY

Sarasota Forest Monastery (SFM), founded in 2015, is a Thai forest monastery affiliated with the Dhammayut Order in the U.S.A. Located in an 8.7-acre forested area in an Englewood suburb, the monastery is an oasis for those seeking refuge from the bustling city life. Surrounded by pines, palms, jamuns, and oaks, the monastery emanates an aura of tranquility and peace that is suitable for practicing in line with the Buddha’s forest-dwelling tradition.

Historically, the forest tradition in Buddhism has been preserved by monks who sought out remote forests, mountains, and caves that were far from the reaches of modern civilization. SFM aims to create a bridge between forest monks and lay communities by creating a practice environment that is sufficiently secluded for dedicated monastics while still being easily accessible for the locals who are interested in learning Buddhist teachings and meditation.

Despite being located amid an urban environment, the monastics at SFM still strive to embody the ideal of the forest tradition by adhering strictly to a high standard for Vinaya (monastic discipline), observing many of what are known as the thirteen dhutanga (ascetic) practices, and leading a life of simplicity, austerity, and diligent effort.

The monastics at SFM are committed to making the authentic teachings of the Buddha accessible to the general public free of charge. SFM offers an opportunity for men and women alike to practice in a secluded forest setting for spiritual growth through meditative reflection.
